pull the thread...

Every episode of the AoE will undoubtedly include references to the work of other creators, historical documents, and sometimes cold hard data. We will never make any claim to being the center of absolute truth, so please refer to our cited sources below for further reading on each episode subject. Knowing that our listeners are largely active skeptics or knowledge seekers like us, we encourage you to do your own research and share anything with us that you find especially eye-opening.

Happy hunting.

EPISODE 10: CREEPYPASTA

There are certain side effects of venturing into unknown territory like podcasting. The most irritating of all for us as proud hosts of the AoE are things falling through the cracks. The page that you're on now is one great big crack. We intend to fill it with useful behind-the-scenes content and links in support of our previous episodes very soon. That's a promise and we thank you for your patience and understanding as we get better at this strange thing that we are doing every day.

That being said, we believe it is absolutely necessary for us to skip ahead and provide all of the further reading for our Creepypasta episode now. That is because pulling all of these particularly knotted threads on your own is key to the true joy and terror of the stories that your devoted hosts discuss on Episode 10 of The Age of Enfrightenment. Enjoy carefully. We'd hate to lose you in any hidden caves or predatory houses.

Ben Drowned

This first one is worth doing the digging on your own. As a start, refer to the Creepypasta Wiki page. We've also included here a video of the alleged haunted Majora's Mask gameplay.

The Dionaea House

This first webpage is where your journey begins. Once you've read it all, follow the second link to see how wide this spiderweb truly is.

smile
As Theo(Ed) speaks about in the episode, this creepypasta is broken into 26 short stories; one for each letter of the alphabet. The first link is an index of each. The second is where you can buy a hard copy of the entire collection.

Ted the Caver
Likely one of the oldest dishes of creepypasta on the internet, the fun is not only in the terrifying read, but in searching for whose story this really is, and if it truly happened.

SCP
"Secure, Contain, Protect" is the mission of the shadow agency that houses all of your nightmares, and many more which you'll wish no one had dreamed up. In this episode, Dave refers to one entry titled "SCP-137." Post-recording it became clear that he was actually talking about "SCP-173." Below are links to this entry, the SCP homepage, and one other entry referred to in this episode. We encourage you dig as deep into the archives as you can stomach.

Slender Man
There has been enough written, illustrated, or filmed about Slender Man to fill a lifetime of research. Here are some places we suggest to begin:

Eric Knudsen posted the first ever image of Slender Man on somethingawful.com in 2009.

Not long after his first appearance, amateur filmmakers created a series devoted to Slender Man called "Marble Hornets." All 87 parts can be seen on YouTube.

Countless articles have been published by credible and questionable news sources alike on the significance of Slender Man in the case of the stabbing of a young girl in 2014. Below are a few that we recommend.

Episode 0: Introduction

The God Helmet

Dave referenced this Wired article in our discussion about the mysterious experiments of Michael Persinger. Jack Hitt wrote this in 1999. The experiments have never officially stopped.

The Phantom Patriot

Theo told us the story of the man who has called himself both "The Phantom Patriot" and "Thoughtcrime." Tea Krulos writes here about "Real Life Super Heroes." In particular, this is a brief history of the actions and alter-egos of Bohemian Grove-infiltrator/vigilante, Richard McCaslin, featured in this week's episode.

Bass-innovator and songwriter Les Claypool created a funky homage to The Phantom Patriot for his album Of Whales and Woe. Check out the music video here.

Memento Mori

As mentioned by Nick in this episode, Crispin Jones is a watch designer based in London, UK. Many of his signature watches feature or allude to the "Memento Mori" motif.

Death is one of the seven "Endless" and sister of the titular character in Neil Gaiman's epic graphic novel series, The Sandman. Nick has a portrait of her tattooed on his leg.
